Expectation reduces joy
“Expectation reduces joy”
This teaching from Sri Sri RaviShankar ji means:
Expectation = “Life should happen my way.”
Joy = “I am okay with what is happening.”
The issue:
'Expectations' are about the future
'Joy' exists only in the present
So when reality doesn’t match your expectation, the mind feels disturbed.
Why expectations reduce joy?
They make happiness conditional (“only if…”)
They create disappointment when unmet
They turn love into silent demands
They pull you away from the present moment
In short:
The tighter the expectation, the lesser the peace.
The key shift: Expectation → Acceptance
Acceptance does not mean:
agreeing with everything
becoming passive
It means:
“This is the reality now. Let me respond wisely.”
How acceptance helps:
- 1) Removes inner resistance
- 2) Reduces emotional pain
- 3) Keeps the mind calm and clear
- 4) Allows you to act without frustration
Expectation says: “This should not be happening.”
Acceptance says: “This is happening. Now what can I do?”
That shift itself restores peace.
Practical example (especially in difficult times)
During tough phases (like illness, loss, or stress), we often expect:
- 1) “Relatives should come and support”
- 2) “Friends should call and check on me”
- 3) “People should understand my situation”
Reality:
- 1) Some show up
- 2) Some don’t
- 3) Some don’t know how to respond
If expectations are high:
- 1) You feel hurt → “They didn’t care”
- 2) Relationships become strained.
With acceptance:
- 1) “People respond based on their capacity and awareness”
- 2) You appreciate those who show up
- 3) You don’t suffer because of those who don’t
Your peace is no longer dependent on others’ behavior.
Simple way to manage expectations:
Replace “must” with “it would be nice”
Do your best, but don’t insist on outcomes
Accept people as they are, not as you want them to be
Essence:
- 1) Expectation binds joy to outcomes
- 2) Acceptance frees joy from outcomes
- 3) “Do your best, accept what comes, and remain at peace.”
Peace that passeth all understanding - Jesus Christ for the goal of every goal is Peace
