Changing Others? Start with Yourself !
I recall a poignant conversation with a friend whom I am meeting after long.
We delved into the intricacies of family life.
As we shared stories, my friend's expression turned concerned, and he sighed:
"My son isn't listening to me. He's constantly glued to his mobile, sleeping late, and waking up early for work. How can he expect to excel in his career when he's sleep-deprived?"
I empathized with his worries and asked, "How old is your son?"
He replied, "He's 25."
I reassured him that this wasn't an isolated issue, as many people struggle with excessive phone use.
He pleaded, "Can you help me change him?"
I smiled gently and said, "No one can change another person."
I paused for emphasis:
"No one can change another person... when they want to change, they change."
My friend looked puzzled, so I clarified:
"The only person who can change him is himself. You can offer advice, guidance, and support, but ultimately, the decision to change lies with him."
My friend asked, "So what should I do?"
I advised:
"Continue to shower your son with affection. When he's ready to change, he will. Until then, focus on the one person you have total control over."
My friend chuckled and asked jokingly, "You mean my wife?!"
I smiled and replied:
"No, I meant You !!"
As Mahatma Gandhi wisely said, 'Be the change you want to see in the world.'
In that moment, I hoped my friend understood that change begins within, and that by being a positive influence, he could inspire his son to make positive changes in his life.
Till then all we can do is hope 🙏
